 My Gear, Information, and Links

Some Background: My CB call sign is (was) XM66-20319, but I never did come up with a handle I liked. Right now I am reading an old 5th Edition RAC Study Guide to obtain a basic amateur radio license (VO1JPH?), hopefully, in 2008. I've been SWL/DXing off and on since about 1976. Some hams I have known, from one extent to another, include: VO1KS, VO1RD, VO2WW, VY2WM and VA3RJO. I even exchanged some trivial e-mails with VO1AX. Recent e-mail contacts include VO1KVT, VO1JNS, VO1KLL and VO1MX. Since I have a lot to learn, I am interested in hearing from any Hams - CLICK HERE TO SEND ME AN E-MAIL.

My great uncle, Walter Garland, was a telegraph operator. I only met him a couple times since he lived in ON, but he did give me a book in 1981 called "Simple Electronics for Modellers" by Ian R. Sinclair. I also get my interest in electronic gadgets from my father, John, who was the provincial sales rep for Panasonic, Channel Master, Antenna Specialists, etc. When we lived in St. John's, before 1967, his CB licence was, I think, in the single digits, but I was only familiar with the ones I used; those being XM66-223 and XM66-224. I still have the old 23 ch. Johnson Messenger 242-0123.

In grade 9 or 10 my father gave me a used Realistic DX-150A. I spent many hours spinning the dials on that rig. Dinesh Gambhir had the DX-160, and a lot more knowledge about SWL than me, so he helped with calibrating the radio and gave me some antenna wire which we strung around my bedroom. He also gave me a bunch of newsletters and helpful documents. Those are still being referenced. Unfortunately, the DX-150A was not working the last time I tried it, so I may have to bring it in somewhere for repairs.

I am currently DXing with Panasonic RF-2900 SW Double Superheterodyne System SSB Receiver and a 70' longwire antenna. This unit was one my father had. I also using his scanners and CB radios, etc. I hope to be able to get on the 2m band in early 2008. In the meantime, I occasionaly monitor the nets.

While working towards a Master, Limited certification to operate a small tour boat in 2003, I obtained ROC-M and ROC-MC. This allows me operate commercial VHF marine radios with DSC and GMDSS, in North American waters.
